The roundtable was chaired by Baroness Doreen Lawrence and attended by the following MPs: Diane Abbott, Dawn Butler, Florence Eshalomi, Chi Onwurah, Abena Oppong-Asare, Kate Osamor, Bell Ribeiro-Addy and Claudia Webbe. Founders of the Protect Black Women initiative - Dyann Heward-Mills, Foluke Taylor and Christine Fostvedt-Mills - were also present.
The founders of Protect Black Women explained that the mission of the initiative is to form an empathetic and empowering support system for Black women in the UK. Protect Black Women facilitated a safe space for attendees to reflect on their experiences of misogyny and racism in professional and personal contexts.
Participants discussed the importance of embracing community, self-care and healing practices to counter the effects of misogyny and racism.
It was agreed that further work is needed to ensure those in positions of power set the right tone at the top and create safe environments for Black women in Parliament and all places of work. Participants agreed to reconvene on a more regular basis and to continue to support and empower each other and future generations.
